God on God, Part 2: Slow to Anger // Jamie Nunnally

God on God, Part 2: Slow to Anger // Jamie Nunnally

God gets angry, but He’s not an angry God. In this message, Lead Pastor Jamie Nunnally shares what God tells us about himself. In this series, we’re letting God tell us who He is as we look at a passage in Exodus 34 where God describes Himself to Moses.

Exodus 34:6-7 God tells us what he is like.

1. GOD GETS ANGRY.

You can’t be slow to anger unless you have anger. Psalm 7:11 NLT

Sometimes anger is not the opposite of love but evidence of love. A God who never gets angry at evil isn’t loving, He’s apathetic.

2. GOD IS SLOW TO ANGER.

The Hebrew phrase here literally means “long of nostrils.” Today. we would say God has a “long fuse.”

Psalm 103:8-10 NLT

Psalm 103:14 NLT

But don’t confuse patience with permission.

Romans 2:4 NIV …

3. GOD’S ANGER HAS A PURPOSE.

Our anger wants payback. God’s anger is seeking correction, protection, or justice.

Hebrews 12:7-8 NLT

Hebrews 12:10-11 NLT

4. JESUS CLARIFIES GOD’S ANGER.

Colossians 1:15 NLT

Mark 3:5 ESV

At the cross, God took sin seriously and loved sinners completely.

5. SINCE GOD IS SLOW TO ANGER, WE SHOULD BE TOO

James 1:19–20 NLT

Ephesians 4:26–27 NLT

God describes Himself slow to anger, and if that’s what our Father is like, that’s what His children should be like too.

Are you slow to anger, like God is?
