Choices, Part 4: Ask Yourself This…

What questions do you ask yourself before you make a decision? Most people don’t ask themselves why they do what they do. Lamentations 3:40 says: “Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord.”

In this sermon, Pastor Jamie Nunnally shares questions that we can ask ourselves to help determine the motivations behind our choices.

5 Questions to ask yourself before making a decision:

  1. What would I think about someone who made the decision I’m about to make?
We’re really good at judging others but God is asking us to judge ourselves.
1 Corinthians 11:31 For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged.
You can tell a lot about yourself by paying attention to who else is making the same choices that you are.
  2. Have I gotten Godly advice?
Proverbs 12:15 The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.
Proverbs 27:6 “Faithful are the wounds of a friend, But deceitful are the kisses of an enemy.”
A bad friend will stab you in the back, but a good friend will stab you in the front.
  3. Will I want to tell this story?
Your life is a book, and every decision you make is writing another sentence to your story.
    Haggai 1:5 “Consider your ways.”
The Message: “Take a good, hard look at your life. Think it over.”
  4. Do I really want to do this, or is this what others think I should do?
Romans 14:12 “So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.”
Other people will be happy to plan out your life for you but they won’t give account for your choices – you will.
  5. Will this glorify God?
Matthew 5:16 “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
You should be drawing attention to God, not yourself, through your good works.
Instead of deciding to do good works to bring glory to God, try decide to glorify God in everything you do and you will automatically do good works.
Are you asking important questions so you will make good choices?
