Missed Calls, Part 1: Missing God’s Voice // Jamie Nunnally

God still speaks. Some say He only speaks through the written Word, yet that Word reveals a God who speaks today.

John 1:1
Jesus is the Word of God, and words communicate. God’s silence isn’t the problem—our sensitivity is. God gave you the ability to hear His voice.

1 Corinthians 2:9–12; Romans 8:16
You have a built-in receiver for God’s voice. The question isn’t “Is God speaking?” but whether you are discerning His messages.

What does God’s voice sound like?
God is Spirit and speaks to your spirit, bypassing natural hearing.
1 Kings 19:11–12
His voice often sounds like your thoughts—but from a different source: subtle, spontaneous, persistent thoughts that remain. You may have been hearing Him for a long time.

Why do we miss it?

  1. Too much noise (Psalm 46:10 NLT) – Distraction drowns direction. Not a speaking problem, but a listening problem.
  2. Wrong expectations (2 Kings 5:9–11 NLT) – We look for mystical while God gives practical steps.
  3. Unsubmitted areas (James 1:5–7 NLT) – Sometimes we don’t want to hear; we want endorsement, not guidance.
  4. Confusing voices (1 Timothy 4:1 NLT) – Not every voice is God’s.

God’s voice vs. Satan’s voice
God leads; Satan pushes.
God clarifies; Satan confuses.
God comforts; Satan frightens.
God encourages; Satan discourages.
God stills; Satan rushes.
God convicts; Satan condemns.
God corrects direction; Satan attacks identity.
The fruit reveals the source.

How to hear God (like answering a call):

  1. AskJames 4:2
  2. Draw nearJames 4:8; Exodus 3:3
  3. Pause and listenMark 9:7 (prayer is being with, talking to, and listening to God)
  4. Recognize His voiceJohn 10:27 (it aligns with Scripture)
  5. Share itProverbs 27:9 (real revelation welcomes accountability)

Closing
Like airplane mode blocks calls, distraction, sin, and busyness disconnect us spiritually. God is still speaking—you may just need to reconnect. Slow down, draw near, get quiet, and say, “God, I’m listening.”

God is speaking. Are you learning to listen?
